I sincerely have a huge issue with labels! the main reason being when we label someone (or a group of someone’s) it most assuredly seems likes we’re judging them… quite frankly, we are. give me one label that isn’t a judgement. [insert sounds of silence]
I’m sure most of us don’t realize it. even positive labels are judgement. I’ve told my kids for years, “I gave each of you a name on purpose, please use it when addressing each other.”
I’d love to say, “let’s get rid of labels altogether,” but I’m not ignorant [label] … not all labels are bad. maybe what I’m asking is that we be more careful with our words. just because you may not agree with who someone is (or the choices they make), doesn’t mean you have the right to label (judge) them!
“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. (Matthew 7:1-5 NLT)
